Job Description

The Atomic Spectroscopy Division is seeking a Graduate Mechanical Engineer to provide mechanical engineering input for the research, design and development of new innovative spectroscopy products.

This requires generating concept ideas, creating new designs, simulations, calculations, data analysis, accepting feedback in design reviews, creating drawings, working with suppliers, ordering parts, creating test plans, building and testing prototypes, refining the design as required to meet the product specification, and transferring the design into production. Creating, testing and implementing solutions for minor improvements of existing products will also be required.

As a Graduate Mechanical Engineer you will have the opportunity to innovate independently and work with other engineers to develop ideas into a successful product. You will be able to identify risks (both technical and commercial), and work within the project teams and across the organization to mitigate them. You will be able to coordinate and collaboratively work with the other functions (other R&D teams, marketing, manufacturing, procurement, quality, product support, etc.) required to turn an idea into a commercial product or make improvements to existing products.

Qualifications

While part of a multi-national organization with design and manufacturing all around the world, this role is for the Melbourne office. You will be joining an exciting R&D team to design and develop Agilent’s new products, as well as support current product engineering. This includes aspects such as:

  • Creating or modify designs using our 3D CAD (Siemens NX)
  • Using engineering principles to help solve complex technical problems
  • Use of MATLAB, Python or other simulation tools to analyse problems
  • A very hands-on approach: building and testing of prototypes (components level, to full instruments for performance testing and regulatory compliance)
  • Designing, building, and testing customized jigs for various support tasks
  • Support the manufacturing teams with process design and optimization
  • Liaise with external suppliers
  • And work with the other teams (like R&D-Electronics, Marketing, Manufacturing, and the Quality team)

As part of the R&D team, you will be given the tools and support (including mentoring) to help develop not only the next generation of diagnostics products, but also your own skills in design and development, problem solving, communication, etc.

Qualifications:

Currently undertaking a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Bio-Medical Engineering, or equivalent.

Some of the additional skills required to excel in this role include:

  • A willingness to learn quickly and autonomously
  • Strong communication skills – written and oral
  • A great balance of hands-on practical knowledge and academic/technical knowledge
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, working in a team environment
  • Problem solving capability
  • A very strong attention to detail
  • Highly self-regulated, disciplined, and motivated.

To be considered for the role, please include a letter detailing why you think you are the best fit for us, for the role and how you can contribute to Agilent through examples.

Agilent Technologies Inc. is an equal opportunity employer. Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran status, disability or any other protected categories under all applicable laws.
